March 14, 2020
Dear Superintendent Jara,
Thank you for meeting with ESEA and Teamsters Local 14 on March 11, 2020 to discuss the COVID-19 along with other issues. At that time, you stated that you team would be presenting on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) at the CCSD Board of Trustee Meeting, Thursday March 12, 2020. ESEA’s Executive Director, Lisa Guzman attended that meeting. The administrative team stated that closure of schools would be determined in collaboration with the Southern Nevada Health District.
ESEA and Teamsters Local 14 represent over 12,000 Support Professionals in the Clark County School District. The Education Support Professionals in the Clark County School District are concerned about the students and their families. The CDC released a memo stating that closing schools is the most effective way to combat the virus. The health and safety of students is our focus. If CCSD wants to #1ForKids then we need to seriously look at closing schools for the health and well being of the students and the staff.
ESEA and Teamsters Local 14 would like to meet with you to discuss options. We want to ensure the bargaining unit is not harmed by this tragic pandemic. Your administrative staff has not ensured that closures will not negatively impact our members. In fact, that have given our members more stress. They have also contradicted the contingency plan that you gave ESEA and the Teamsters on March 11, 2020.
We know closing schools is a tough decision. ESEA and Teamsters Local 14 also know that together with all of the Superintendents in the state, you all will decide what is best for the students in your district. Together we can come up with a memorandum of understanding for ESPs so that the emergency closures have a path for all districts to follow.
We look forward to hearing from you.
