NSEA to Testify on AB 280
The Assembly Ways and Means
Committee will be hearing AB 280 - the bill that would provide funding
for four additional school days; as well as additional funding
for "Pay for Performance" based on locally bargained
incentives.
"We
appreciate the intention of the Democratic Leadership in the Assembly
to provide additional money for salaries, but the salary increases need
to be extended to all school employees as well as the incentives,"
said NSEA Executive Director Terry Hickman.
"We strongly
recommend that additional days be inclusive of all those who work in
public schools and the additional days be subject to bargaining."
Hickman will be
testifying Monday, April 23 at 8:00 a.m. in room 3137 of the
legislature.

NEA President Awarded MALDEF
Excellence in Leadership Award
Weaver honored for
contributions to Latino community
NEA President Reg Weaver was awarded The Mexican
American Legal Defense and Educational Fund Excellence in Leadership
Award at the organization's 6th Annual Awards Dinner on April 19.
MALDEF recognized Weaver for his outstanding service and leadership to
the Latino community, as well as NEA's extensive outreach programs to
minority communities.
"The National Education Association believes
that every child in this country has a basic right to attend a great
public school," said Weaver. "We also believe that public
education is the cornerstone of the American dream, and we want to keep
that dream alive."
Under Weaver's leadership, NEA launched a minority
community outreach department that works to strengthen relationships with
partners like MALDEF representing ethnic minority communities, and
initiate new partnerships and projects around issues of mutual interest,
such as developing strategies to close the gaps in student achievement.
