Action Required!
Legislators
are currently discussing the issue of salary increases for education
personnel. The most recent proposal lawmakers are entertaining
has been recommended by Governor Guinn--2 percent for the 2007-2008
school year and 4 percent for the 2008-2009 school year.
Contact these
influential legislators and let them know the proposal is
inadequate. With less than a month left in the school year, our
state still has more than 500 teaching vacancies for the 2006-2007
school year, and more than 14,000 of our students are being taught by a
long term substitute.
Competitive
salaries are needed to attract and retain quality teachers in Nevada.
The current salary proposal will not solve this ongoing and growing
problem. Contact Senator
Bill Raggio, Senator Bob
Beers, Senator Barbara
Cegavske, Senator Dina
Titus, Assemblywoman Barbara
Buckley, Assemblyman
Morse Arberry, Assemblywoman
Sheila Leslie, and Assemblywoman
Heidi Gansert today!

SB
544 - Retiree Health Insurance
At the present
time, educators who choose PEBP (the state health insurance) receive a
premium subsidy when they retire that makes the cost of retiree health
insurance lower. SB 544 removes the option for school
district retirees to join PEBP upon retirement unless PEBP also covers
active employees of that school district. The effective date would be
July 1, 2007 - no educator whose retirement date becomes effective after
that date would be eligible for PEBP and the subsidy.
Contact your legislator and
ask them to change the effective date to October 1, 2009. The
change in the effective date is needed for the following reasons:
·
When educators retire their
retirement becomes effective at the beginning of the new school year, not
the end of the old one. A July effective date is not practical or
helpful for public school employees.
·
Extending the effective date by
two years will give educators time to properly plan for retirement.
NCLB Action Guide
It's Time for a Change
NCLB/ ESEA is not working as intended.
With this law now up for renewal, here's our chance to persuade Congress
that fundamental changes are needed.
To make NCLB work for students and for
public schools, we need changes in its accountability, testing, and
teacher quality provisions. NEA's goal is to improve the law by
substantially correcting its flaws and adding positive provisions.
Use the tools and resources in this
NCLB/ESEA Action Guide to promote NEA's constructive proposals for
change. Make your voice heard - in your Association, in your
community, and in the Congress - so that our message on NCLB is clear:
It's time for a change!

NEA
President Reg Weaver Meets with Local Media
NEA President Reg Weaver was in Las Vegas
Tuesday to meet with the editorial board of the Las
Vegas Sun newspaper regarding the
reauthorization of No Child Left Behind. He was joined by NEA
staffer Joel Packer, and NSEA Executive Director Terry Hickman. The
message was loud and clear, "It's time for change!"
Please join association leadership in
delivering the same message about the need to change the so-called No
Child Left Behind Act.
