ESEA Launches SOS: SPTA Organizing Campaign to Support Paraprofessionals

The ESEA has launched the "SOS: SPTAS Organizing SPTAS" campaign to advocate for Specialized Programs Teacher Assistants (SPTAs) who are leaving their positions in the Clark County School District (CCSD) due to inadequate compensation and a lack of support and professional development. ESEA Launches SOS: SPTA Organizing Campaign to Support Paraprofessionals

ESEA is proud to announce the launch of our SOS: SPTAS Organizing SPTAS Campaign, dedicated to advocating for Specialized Programs Teacher Assistants (SPTAs) across CCSD. These paraprofessionals play a vital role in supporting our most vulnerable students, performing critical duties to ensure they receive the education and care they deserve.

However, many SPTAs are leaving their positions—why? The answer is clear: inadequate compensation remains the top reason. While funding discussions are ongoing and will be addressed during bargaining, it’s important to focus on other key issues impacting retention.

Lack of Support and Professional Development
All employees deserve meaningful support to succeed. Unfortunately, many SPTAs lack the essential training, resources, and professional growth opportunities needed to excel in their roles. Recognizing this, ESEA has established a new organizing committee comprising an initial group of 30 SPTA members. This committee will work to raise awareness and advocate for better conditions for our SPTAs across the county.

It’s time for CCSD to elevate and support our paraprofessionals who are responsible for our most vulnerable students. Higher SPTA participation has a direct influence on student learning conditions, and our organizing efforts aim to amplify these voices. We also plan to engage parents and community members to provide testimony at the CCSD Board of Trustees meetings and strengthen our bargaining position.
